I can't even...the pictures are horrible and gross, there is an emulsion of oil and coolant in the coolant system, my buddy is dealing with this right now...

Interesting. My Montero’s coolant looked like this until I flushed it a few months ago. I know the valve cover gaskets are bad but we (mechanic or I) never checked the oil cooler as being the culprit when we back flushed the cooling system.

Did flushing and replacing the heat exchanger fix the issue? How hard was it to clear all the veins etc?

Haven’t checked my coolant for contamination lately, we did the flush since we were no longer getting cabin heat. I feared a new heater core was needed so i started with the cheapest repair and went from there. I never had overheating issues, and my coolant was past peanut butter and looked like a chocolate milkshake.

Holy crap. My buddy is in the middle of hooking up a hose from his hot water heater to his cooling system!! His radiator is shot, stuffed full of shmeg. You got lucky the heater core didn't plug!

It was the last leg of a 3,000 mile trip when the heat gave out. We have had the Montero almost two years and never had a cooling issue. Lucky indeed
